Sitting wrong is easy. We still sit a lot and frequently. There are two main reasons for this. We use less energy when we sit, and we can concentrate better.
In short: sitting makes mental work very efficient. Unfortunately, however, we are not designed to work sitting down for long periods of time. Nature has created us in such a way that we can move a lot and for long periods, up to 20 km a day, without any problems. Humans are primarily made for hunting and gathering, not for sitting for hours on end. We can easily walk 15 miles a day. The average “office worker” only manages a fraction of that. Together with SENATOR, this approach led to a simple question: how can we generate more movement throughout the day while sitting? The basic idea behind this question led to an approach for a new type of backrest concept that is modeled on the counter-rotating movement of a fish and can therefore automatically adapt to the user’s movements without readjustment. The structure of a fish’s body impressively demonstrates the gentle transition between negative and positive curves. Throughout the day, FreeFlow’s auto-adaptive back ensures significantly more movement than conventional swivel chairs and provides additional support where it makes ergonomic sense.
